Stories From The Road

BANGKOK, THAILAND – I arrived in Bangkok Thursday night after having an amazing flight with Emirates. As me and my fellow travelers were leaving the airport to hail a taxi, we were stopped by a man in a suit who offered us a van to our hotel instead of us taking two separate taxis. At first I was a little skeptical but he had a booth at the airport, so he had to be legitimate. I talked with him about the pricing and for 1400 Thai Bhat ($46.67 USD) or 233 Bhat each ($7.76 USD), all six of us could get a ride to our hotel. He then offered us a four hour tour for the next day at a discounted rate. At a total of 610 Bhat ($20.33 USD) we would get a four hour tour of the the three most famous temples in Bangkok. We knew that this was a good deal because normally the tour cost $40 USD for four hours. We all agreed and bought the tour not know what to expect. As we made our way to the van he then offered that for an additional 1400 Bhat, the same van and driver would pick us up and bring us back to the airport at the end of our trip. Again we agreed thinking that this would be the best way for us all to stay together.

After about 45 minutes of traveling we arrived at our hotel. We were staying at the Anantara Bangkok Sathorn, a five start hotel and one that was completely worth the price. After checking in went to find a bar to grab a drink. We walked down the road from our hotel and found a 7-11. We quickly found out that in Bangkok alcohol could only be purchased between 12-5PM and 7-9PM. Discouraged we headed back to our hotel. Along the way we found a bar. In Thailand last call is at 1:30 AM, however, we had made it just in time. We all enjoyed a Chang Beer, one of the locally produced beers in Thailand. Once we were finished we headed back to our hotel and went to bed. We had an early day ahead of us.
